It was the middle of an ordinary 1974 Thursday afternoon hanging out in my friend’s living room when she leaned in and asked me a question that stopped me in my tracks (and has never left my brain).

We were 15 years olds with all the usual angst and discomfort of being, well you know, 15 year olds, but we had finally progressed to the magical world of drivers ed. We were learning to drive cars.

She was a lovely smart girl, certainly more practical than I, and she wanted to know…in advance…exactly what she needed to do. The steps she would need to take…and how much turn to apply to the wheel to get her pointed in the direction she wanted to go.

Which is a lot like the women I work with, the ones I help to lose weight for the last time.
