DO YOU EVER MAKE THINGS NEEDLESSLY HARD FOR YOURSELF BECAUSE YOU SIMPLY KEEP DOING THINGS THE WAY YOU’VE ALWAYS DONE THEM BEFORE?

I know I find myself in the “same old, same old trap” at times, then I wonder what took me so long to finally see there was an easier way.

IT’S LIKE BEING STUCK IN A BOX AND FORGETTING I CAN JUST OPEN THE LID AND STEP OUT.

I actually have a couple examples from just today.

The first was; one of the mantras I heard all the time growing up was, “neither a borrower nor a lender be.”

What I took this to mean was, avoid debt, be self-sufficient.

Reality is that to become a homeowner I had to take out a loan, but in my mind the primary object was to pay off my home completely, as quick as possible. So naturally I got the shortest possible mortgage I could manage.

I don’t know about you, but a giant monthly home mortgage payment puts a pretty big crimp in my budget.

The re-fi lightbulb finally went off in my brain, and as of today I’m looking forward to a mortgage payment that will be less than paying rent.

What?!?!!

I’m crazy excited, because now the future is full of new possibilities.

MY NEXT BIG AH-HA, WAS HOW MUCH STUFF ACCUMULATES AND HOW MUCH IT HOLDS ME BACK.

So this month I am focusing on picking one task at a time (closet, car, desk, kitchen cupboard, etc.) and completely clearing it out, cleaning it, then only putting back things I love or use regularly. I am saying goodbye to some really good stuff, but it’s stuff that no longer serves me.

I am asking 3 questions of each item;

  • Is it serving me?
  • Do I want it?
  • Is it current or out-dated?

I just spent 60 minutes taking every single thing out of my car, cleaning my car, then only putting back things that passed the test.

Wonder of wonders, my car is like brand new to me. It’s roomy and full of possibility (and it’s just a wee Prius).

THE CLEANING OF THE LOCATIONS IS A METAPHOR FOR THE CLEANING OF MY BRAIN.

As a daily practice I am dumping out all the thoughts I can think of on whatever topic I want out onto a piece of paper so I can really see what’s going on in my brain. (5 minute exercise)

Then I am asking the same three questions of my thoughts.

  • Is it serving me?
  • Do I want it?
  • Is it current or out-dated?

As I’ve mentioned so many times before, thoughts are optional, but just like cluttered closets, cupboards, junk drawers or cars, most of us have lots of old out-dated, crumb crusted thoughts running around in our heads that are so familiar we never even notice that they’re there.

And they may the only reason we never seem to achieve the dreams we have for ourselves.

AS THE SUMMER WINDS DOWN, FALL MOVES INTO FULL SWING, AND THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS CLOSING IN, WHAT AREAS OF YOUR LIFE MIGHT BE RIPE FOR A THOROUGH CLEANING?

What was on your to-do list for 2019 that you haven’t completed yet?

There’s nothing like getting rid of a bunch of old stuff (or thoughts) that are weighing you down, to make room for something new and fresh in your life.
