Once you’ve set your sights on improving your health, dropping a few pounds, you’re going to need a game plan.

For starters, you’re going to want to know where you want to go, whether that is an ideal weight, a new blood glucose number, or some other goal post.

You get to decide, but make it a concrete destination.

Next, you’ll want to flesh out the vision of what it will be like to achieve that goal.

The more detail the better. How do you feel? move? behave?

What do you believe now that you have arrived?

What thoughts did you have to give up believing to make this a reality?

If you’re confused by this one, here are a few of the thoughts myself and my clients have had to stop believing;

  • Nothing ever works for me.
  • No matter how hard I try I can’t seem to do this.
  • I’m just a big girl.
  • My metabolism sucks.
  • There’s no way this can work.

Next, you’re going to want to know what you’re doing right now… that’s why you are where you are.

Seems like a silly step, especially when you are ready to just get going, but this can be a big help down the road, plus it’s darn interesting to look back at.

I recommend keeping a simple journal of all your eating and drinking for a week. No need to weigh and measure, just jot down what you’re eating and when.

Do this for a week. Then take a look at your results from the prospective of being curious.

Next, make a decision about something you are willing to do to make a change to your routine.

Maybe it is giving up one snack time. Maybe stopping eating at a certain time of day. Maybe you eat a little more dinner and eliminate dessert.

This is where the magic starts to happen. You are going to start becoming the vision of your future self that you dreamed of in step #1.

  • How does she do mornings?
  • When does she eat? How much? What kinds of food?
  • How does she handle stress? Unexpected events?
  • What’s her fall-back plan?

Since she knew all along that reaching her goal was a forgone conclusion, all she had to do was keep moving forward, how did she do it?

When you’re stuck, go forward to your future self and ask her how she handled the situation you’re in today.

She’ll never beat you up for making a mistake, she’ll have her hand out ready to welcome you to your beautiful future.

She’ll show you entirely new ways of looking at the world that you’ve never thought of.

That’s the thing about the future, it’s going to be different than the present and the past.

You’ll be doing the things you’ve haven’t done before.

The answers aren’t behind you…so stop looking back for answers.

Look to your future.
